A little Disney prince in the making. Goldfish have incredible memories and can remember things for up to five months. They can recognize their owners and even be taught to swim though mazes and do tricks for food

Spent the morning collecting acorns. Did you know that every few years, oak trees has a “mast year,” dropping a massive amount of acorns at once? The abundance of acorns can ripple through the entire food web, creating population booms in animals like squirrels, deer, and jays

Friends with hens. We love letting Remi get down and dirty when we do farm chores. It feels like we’re returning to how things ought to be in these moments

We are fermenting machines! We have been doing fermented ketchup, bean paste, and kraut so we figured why not ferment some foods for the hens? The girls definitely had a clear preference for the fermented feed.

Here’s the recipe, and we will do a future video of making the feed.

1:1 ratio of feed to water
Apple cider vinegar vinegar
1-3 days time depending on how hot it is. Slower fermentation is going to yield better probiotic cultures
Stir the mixture each day

Feeding the fish in the stock tank has become his favorite activity during our morning chore routine

The goldfish in our cattle water tank help keep mosquito larvae and algae at bay and their waste adds nutrients that can help stabilize the water!

We raised $9,002.74 for Texas Flood Victims and have sent our first check off to the Spirit of Giving!

As we looked for the best way to help our fellow Texans affected by this summer’s flood, one organization stood out: the Spirit of Giving Fund, which was started by @heb

For us, this is personal. Katy’s mom dedicated 16 years to H-E-B before she retired. We will never forget the security H-E-B’s health insurance provided her as a single parent, a benefit that made a world of difference.

We witnessed how H-E-B genuinely cares for its employees, treating them with respect and integrity that isn’t always common. This deep commitment to people is why we trust them completely. We know that same spirit drives their charitable fund and we are proud to support their efforts to help Texas communities hit by the flood.

Giving our 20 month old more responsibilities during our morning chores has been a game changer. He knows the whole routine. First the donkey and cows, next the fish, and then the chickens. Having his own little part of the routine helps bolster his confidence and development

Update: the hens are still laying in the cow feeder 😅 We’ve put another decoy egg in the chicken coop to encourage to lay at home again

Close the gate! Otherwise the cows will go where they are not supposed to and wreak havoc.

Chickens are great because they dig up the cow manure, helping revitalize the land. Donkeys are great too because they’re so darn cute.

Taking care of the animals with our son before we go for our morning run. We didn’t always know it but we worked our whole lives for this.

Putting our son’s toy egg to use! Sometimes free range chickens will stop laying in their boxes. One way we can encourage the hens to lay in their nesting boxes again is to place imposter eggs in. Let’s see how long it takes before the chickens lay here again!

Soothing. Junebug loves her daily brushing

Can you tell which one is pregnant? The mama is due next month. The calf will be 75% Jersey, which are known for their delicious, creamy milk. We used sexed semen so the calf is guaranteed to be a girl

Someone was a little too excited about eggs this morning

Come deep clean the chicken coop with us. We use the deep litter method. Pellets on the bottom, pine shavings on top of that, and top off the nesting boxes with hay.

Donkey selfie! Did you know that donkeys are great guard animals? It took years for him to warm up to us, but now he trusts our family and helps guard the chickens from predators.

Nothing more soothing than happy chickens and birds chirping in the morning ☀️

We are so honored to be interviewed by @mhguy and appear on air last night on @cbsnewstexas! All this is just too surreal!!

We’re not full time homesteaders so sometimes everything else in life gets in the way of keeping up with our homestead. But we always get back to it. We’re making short work of our overgrown garden and feeding the cows 🤩

Bone broth done right.
This is the gut-friendly, collagen-rich recipe we return to every single week. It is great for your microbiome and deeply nourishing.

Ingredients
• 1 raw chicken carcass
• 1 package of chicken feet
• 1 bay leaf
• 2 tablespoons white vinegar (helps draw collagen from the bones)
• Fill your crockpot with water after all the other ingredients

Instructions
1. Place everything in a crockpot and cover with water.
2. Cook on low for 24 hours.
3. Filter through a mesh colander and refrigerate.

As you reheat, season however you like salt, herbs, or even a splash of lemon.

Our first chicken setup lasted us four years. This is a little chicken coop from @tractorsupply. It is well built, has a run, nesting boxes and roosts that’s perfect for a starter flock of 3-5 hens. The roof eventually gave out but it weathered a couple snow storms (in Texas!) and lots of very heavy rain storms.
